A mega beautification programme worth PKR 140 million has been initiated by the Rawalpindi Development Authority to develop prime roads of the city along with improving the discipline on traffic. The program reported on November 6 targets main areas, which included Kachehri Chowk, Rashid Minhas Road, Murir Hasan, Murir Chowk, Murree Road, and Faizabad, in an attempt to ensure safety of pedestrian, better flow of traffic along with better public places.
Dedicated cycle tracks, modern speed breakers, and zebra crossings at busy intersections will ensure complete pedestrian safety. Footpaths will have special poles and illegal entry to roads will be curbed by installing barriers, while reflectors will help make the road more visible while night walking.
To make school zones quieter, honking near schools and colleges would be banned. Improved lighting will also enhance safety on the roads during the evenings. Among some of the proposals that have been made by the authorities with respect to Murree Road underpasses is the setting height barriers at eight feet to regulate access of vehicles at the Moti Mahal and Committee Chowk underpasses.
RDA Director General Kanza Murtaza said that this drive will further improve traffic and decrease accidents with stricter traffic regulations. The RDA along with the Municipal Corporation will also clear encroachments to ensure uninterrupted pathways for pedestrians.
Improvements along the Saddar to Faizabad Metrobus corridor are under way, that will further raise the infrastructure level of the city. Once finalized, it is expected that this all-inclusive beautification and traffic management project will make Rawalpindi a safe city for everyone.
