Karachi, January , 2025 – In a major effort to resolve land-related issues in Orangi Town, Mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, announced on Thursday that all land records in the area would be fully computerized. This step is aimed at eliminating the risk of fraud, alterations, and forgeries, while ensuring complete transparency in land management.
During his address at a meeting with the officials of the Orangi Town Pilot Project, Mayor Wahab revealed that approximately 40% of the 193 ST plots in Orangi Town had been illegally occupied. These plots, originally designated for welfare purposes, will be cleared and repurposed for community use, such as playgrounds, parks, schools, and community centers. The mayor emphasized that these areas must be restored to serve the public and pledged to ensure their proper utilization.
The mayor further directed the urgent computerization of all Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) land records in Orangi Town. He instructed that records from current land allottees be retrieved and stored digitally to prevent any fraudulent activities or alterations. As part of this initiative, maps and details of informal settlements in the area will also be digitized for better land management and oversight.
Barrister Murtaza Wahab also highlighted the review of 350 pending double lease cases and instructed officials to pursue these cases in court to ensure justice. He confirmed that once cleared, plots under the Orangi Town Pilot Project would be put up for public auction, following established rules and regulations.
In his commitment to transparency and accountability, the mayor assured the public that any officer found guilty of corruption, including fraudulent land deals, would face severe consequences. This would include removal from office and legal action through Anti-Corruption and other relevant agencies. Additionally, the mayor promised that officials who successfully resolve land disputes would be rewarded with performance bonuses.
This initiative marks a significant move towards addressing long-standing land disputes and improving public facilities in Orangi Town. With the computerization of land records and strict measures against corruption, Mayor Wahab aims to ensure that citizens receive the public services they deserve while enhancing the management of land resources in the area.
