Lahore, January 31, 2025 – The Punjab government has established the Punjab Special Planning Authority (PSPA) to combat illegal housing societies and promote efficient urban development across the province.
The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The session focused on proposals for zoning regulations and sustainable urban planning. The PSPA will oversee district land use planning and zoning, with a review of urban needs every four years to maintain compliance with evolving demands.
The government emphasized the importance of developing eco-friendly, walkable housing societies. Additionally, the need for clear separation between commercial and residential areas was discussed. A special planning committee, headed by the deputy commissioner, will be formed in each district, including representatives from key service providers like WAPDA, Sui Gas, and WASA.
To curb land misuse, the government will introduce a "District Digital Wall" to track unauthorized land conversions. Moreover, a fast-track approval system for legal housing projects based on digital data will be put in place.
CM Maryam Nawaz highlighted the importance of regulated urban planning, stressing that unregulated growth has led to the rise of illegal housing schemes. She instructed authorities to expedite the processing of pending housing sector applications and demanded daily progress updates on the Lahore Development Plan.
In addition to the PSPA, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) continues its crackdown on illegal commercial properties. Recently, 105 unauthorized properties across various locations, including Johar Town, Sabzazar, Canal Road, and Faisal Town, were sealed.
The establishment of the PSPA is expected to play a crucial role in fostering organized urban growth, addressing land violations, and promoting sustainable development across Punjab.
